Many companies in media are pushing their own versions of a subscription service. Netflix kicked off the trend and gained mainstream attraction, and now platforms like Steam act as an aggregator for the various subscriptions out there. But for those no longer interested in a particular subscription for whatever reason, such as EA Play, canceling it can be a little tricky.
How to unsubscribe from automatic subscriptions on Steam
Can you cancel subscriptions through the Steam platform?
Unfortunately, subscriptions cannot be canceled through Steam’s desktop application. They must be managed through Steam’s website directly.
How to cancel EA Play
For our purposes, we’ll use EA Play as an example of how to cancel a subscription. EA Play is a $4.99 monthly subscription service that allows users to play any EA title through Steam. It’s similar to Xbox Game Pass. To cancel it, or any subscription service run through Steam, users must log in to Steam’s website. From there, click your username in the top-right corner and select Account details. Under Store & Purchase History, select Manage subscriptions. It is on this screen that users can manage any and all subscriptions they have through Steam.
It’s a little counter-intuitive to require users to log in to the site version of the application to manage something like this. But, it makes sense from their perspective, as little hurdles like this dissuade users from unsubscribing, earning more money for both platforms.
