While Mareanie is not the most well-known of pocket monsters in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, many might recognize this Poison- and Water-type Brutal Star Pokémon from the Fashion Week Event in Pokémon GO in September 2022. Mareanie is a sea anemone-like creature with blue and purple skin, and the tentacles from its head form a provisional hairstyle for the pocket monster’s appearance. As one might expect of a sea anemone-style creature, Mareanie prefers to live near or in the ocean, as its spongy skin adapts well to being underwater for extended periods of time. Once this Brutal Star pocket monster reaches a certain level, it evolves into Toxapex.
Catching and Evolving Mareanie in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet
To catch Mareanie in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, Trainers must search the shores along the coastal line of the East Province in Paldea. Mareanie can spawn from the eastern rocky cliffs of South Province (Area Five) by the East Paldea Sea until the top of East Province (Area Three).
How to evolve Fomantis into Lurantis in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet
Mareanie is quite small, which can make it hard to see on the beach at nighttime. Nevertheless, once players have encountered a Wild Mareanie, they can capture it using a Quick Ball or by effectively weakening it with Electric-, Ground-, or Psychic-type Moves in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. When using Electric-type Moves in combat, keep in mind that Mareanie is innately equipped with Limber, which prevents the Brutal Star Pokémon from being paralyzed. According to Game8, catching or defeating Mareanie can potentially yield Mareanie Spikes, a TM material used to craft the Poison Jab TM083 and the Toxic Spikes TM091.
After catching Mareanie in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, the next step that Trainers might want to conduct is evolving the Brutal Star pocket monster into Toxapex. This evolution is triggered when Mareanie attains Level 38, which can be done through active party participation, battles, or EXP Candy. Toxapex’s dual elemental types are the same as Mareanie — Water and Poison. Stat-wise, Toxapex is naturally superior to its base form and wields notably high Defense and Special Defense. These two stats are so high that Toxapex will likely make it into the top-fifteen choices as a formidable tank for Water- or Poison-type tier lists made by the community.
Pokémon Scarlet and Violet are available on the Nintendo Switch.
